Activities for kids when the weather is bad
April 19, 2010If April showers bring May flowers, what in the world is a mom to do with her kiddos when they are home-bound the whole day and not go absolutely bonkers?? Here’s a top ten list of ideas to keep moms and Pollywogs of all ages entertained througout the rainy season! Be sure to let me know what you have found to get through these soggy days.
1. Make stuff. Play-dough. Bubbles. A Biodome. A Wave Jar. Based on your Kiddling’s age and what they will play with, Making the play-thing is more than half the fun than the actual playing!
2. Bake stuff. Cookies are an easy thing for youngsters to participate in making. They require minimum kitchen-appliance usage and allow kids to learn how to measure and have fun adding ingredients. Once the cookies are made, let the kids get out their creativity as they decorate them! Simple frosting, sprinkles, food coloring, and even any small Easter candy makes for great cookie-decor. Don’t feel like using the oven? Make creations like “Fish in Water” popsicles or jell-o (blue juice/jell-o with fish candies dropped in), “Dirt and Worms” (chocolate pudding, cookie crumbles, gummy worms), or “Ants on a Log” (celery sticks, peanut butter, raisins). Then have fun enjoying your creations!
3. Get Artsy. An older kid will enjoy drawing, coloring, scrapbooking, photographing, and making creations. Younger ones may not quite yet. I thought it would be fun to give my Toddleroo some Color Wonder paints and markers. The only thing about these art products is that the colors take a moment to show up, so my little one loses interest quickly. What I found she does enjoy is finger-painting. Well, hand and body painting, really. We lay out a whole patch of newspapers, take her down to her diaper, put the paint on a paper plate and let her go to town.
4. Bring the Outside In. Play golf in the house by placing cups tipped on their sides in different rooms and putt through. If two adults are home, make a hammock out of a sheet and rock your Tyke. Have a picnic in the living room. Fill up an inflatable kid’s pool with packing peanuts.
5. Have a Dance Party. Turn the music up and wiggle away! This is great for Totsters of all ages. Little ones naturally like to wiggle and rock. Bigger ones can make up their own moves. Let older Boogie-ers create their very own “signature move” named after them. To incorporate dancing throughout the day, put on some music and decide in advance on three songs that, whenever they are played, the Dance Craze takes over.
